Cyclopterus lumpus - Lumsucker / Sea hen - Iâr fôr

The lumpsucker is easy to identify as there are no other fishes in Welsh seas similar. Colour varies but shape remains the same from small juveniles only a centimeter or so long up to large adults. Male lumpsuckers guard their eggs as can be seen in the above photo (the eggs are in the crevice behind the fish), but this can lead to their downfall as often the eggs are laid in shallow water and in rough weathr the adult may be thrown onto the beach where it suffocates. Smaller fish are sometimes washed up on the shoreline too.
